Combining Self-Portrait Photography with AI-Generated Image Backdrops

In a recent collection of images I created for social media, I experimented with combining self-portrait photography and AI-generated images created with ChatGPT/DALL-E3 as backdrops.

Example 1: Waiting (Self-Portrait + AI-Generated Image Backdrop)

The black and white image displays a monochromatic, classic library setting with a woman standing in the center. Her back is to the viewer, and she has long hair that cascades down her back. In front of her is a large, ornate book stand with an open book atop it. The library is filled with towering bookshelves packed with books, a gothic-style window illuminating the room with natural light, and a vintage lamp to her side, enhancing the historical ambiance of the setting. The atmosphere is reflective and serene, suggestive of introspection or scholarly pursuit.

Example 2: Happy Easter (Self-Portrait + AI-Generated Image Backdrop)

This image is a vibrant self-portrait set against a fantastical AI-generated background. A woman poses in a satin pink dress that gracefully hugs her form. Her long, straight black hair frames her smiling face. The scene behind her is a picturesque, serene garden, and a shadowy manor adorned with flowers and warm lighting. A calm pool reflects the sky, filled oversized, decorative Easter eggs float on the water and dot the manicured lawn. The atmosphere is one of celebration and serenity, merging a festive occasion with the tranquil beauty of a garden party.

Example 3: Urbex Barbie (Self-Portrait + Real Photo Backdrop)

How do AI-generated images compare with a real photo background?

In this image, a woman stands in the foreground, offering a soft contrast to the gritty backdrop. She is dressed in a fitted, bright pink dress, her black hair falling straight just past her shoulders. She gives a subtle smile as she poses confidently amidst the scene. Behind her is a real, dilapidated structure known for urban exploration, featuring an array of graffiti. The Domes are made of rough, brown surface, punctuated by holes that let in daylight. The graffiti is colorful and extensive. Debris and broken pieces of the building are scattered on the ground, adding to the raw and edgy feel.

The real photo background starkly contrasts the clean and deliberate AI-generated backgrounds, providing a rich texture and a sense of authenticity to the portrait.

Don’t get too excited explorers – this location has been demolished. The background photo was taken with an older iPhone in 2017.
